Switzerland in 1799

Switzerland experienced one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Napoleon's French troops clashed with the Austro-Russian coalition led by the legendary General Suvorov on the alpine passes of San Gottardo. Canton Appenzell, the setting of our story, hosted Swiss militiamen under General von Bachmann who supported the Austrian army in this epic battle between empires.

Why "Betlyland"

The Opera That Conquered Europe

In 1836, the genius of Gaetano Donizetti created "Betly or the Swiss Cottage", a masterpiece that debuted on August 24th at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples. The success was overwhelming: over 200 performances in just a few years!

The Refusal to La Scala

When La Scala in Milan requested the opera, Donizetti surprised everyone with a sensational refusal: "I prefer small theaters with 600 seats". A choice that reveals his intimate and authentic vision of theater.

During this period, Donizetti revolutionized orchestral arrangement: instruments arranged in a semicircle around the conductor, a configuration still used today!

The name Betlyland comes from the heroine of Donizetti's opera: Betly, the lively innkeeper of Appenzell. Just as she welcomes travelers to her 1799 inn, so Betlyland welcomes modern visitors to an authentic historical experience.

Composed in 1836, it returns to Switzerland with historical costumes, choir and complete orchestra bringing Donizetti's magic back to life.

Canton Appenzell, near Herisau, 1799-1800: the era when Europe's destiny was decided on the Swiss Alps.

Betly, witty innkeeper, and Daniele, lovestruck farmer. Between village pranks and misunderstandings, love triumphs thanks to the intervention of Sergeant Max, Betly's brother returned from war.
